Why the Assault Gunboat might save us all
Emphasis on "might".
But let’s look at the possibility. Let’s say that in some way Alpha Class alpha strikes, in whatever form, can bust up the two ship meta... and maybe somehow can also TL and eviscerate Biggs quick enough that that Fairship withers a little too. IF... if that somehow happens, I can't see x2-x4 Gunboats becoming the most dominant thing in the meta... meta busting? Maybe? But oh my, Poe, Vader, A-Wings (I'll post a pic for the newer X-Wing players who don't know what that is), TIE Interceptors (anything PTL Royal), Fenn Rau, etc will eat any mid to low Gunboat for lunch. They can reposition after the Major and certainly after anybody else. SLAM turns don't matter, arc is tough, high PS arc dodgers will eat Gunboats up.
So how is this helping? Well IF (again if) the Gunboats can counter the big two ships (and I feel like there's a chance)... they will be able to take that match up enough that I think people will play them. The reason this works, is so many of us love the Gunboat. We're gonna run the little StarWing regardless. So IF Gunboat is the paper in the rock-paper-scissors dynamic it will still get play regardless of the always and unexplained presence of the scissors (arc dodgers) in System Opens, Store Champs, Regionals, etc. I feel confident on this, because we still see aces, even though they get tabled by top lists. If aces stick around, pretty sure the Gunboat will too.
What this finally brings is a little variety to a rock v rock meta (Fairship/Biggs/Kanan/RAC/BigBombers etc are all high durablity, arc ignoring/uncaring lists... IMO). And the silver lining is that even if I'm flat out wrong and the Gunboat isn't the paper we've been looking for, something will be. We have enough new ships and and enough new options that any of the Wave 12.5 ships could finally move into the durability-killing slot... and then Aces of any color can eat those arc bound ships... and we have a Renaissance in the meta, where the Gunboats, Tanks, and Aces can all circle each other instead of Miranda and friends/posers trying to chew down Wookie guarded Biggs junk or slightly variated mirror match finals.
Here's the bonus... if one of the Wave 12.5 ships is the meta slayer... the solutions (beside already being in the game) could very well be the Wave 12.5 ships too... Silencer or Rebel Aces boosted by Phantom II could be the silver bullet to this werewolf... or soon to be seen Resistance A-Wings
